Crematorium Addolorata Cremation Malta

The Camilleri Memorial Park & Crematorium is a project, pending approval, to build Malta’s first cremation facility catering for the needs of our islands. The project, submitted by Active Group is designed over an area of 7,600 sqm of land owned by the company, located behind the Addolorata cemetery (opposite the new extension).

The goal of the project is to give greater choice to the public on how to give a last farewell to their dearly departed, a place to hold a ceremony of celebration of life and where they can visit their loved ones in a peaceful and tranquil environment.

The project took several years of planning and research to create a facility which is not only respectful to the environment and its surroundings, but which caters for all the needs of residents of Malta and Gozo, irrespective of faith or religion

The first application submitted in 2017 was declined as there was no law regulating Cremation in Malta at the time. A second application was submitted in 2021, only to be refused again due to unavailability of guidelines regulating construction of crematoria.

The latest (3rd) application was resubmitted in October 2024, following the much anticipated guidelines issued by the Malta Planning authority.r. This application is now pending feedback from the Planning Authority and other authorities concerned.

Development permission is hoped for early 2025 and the facility to be operational by 2026. In the meantime the crematorium in Misterbianco, Catania, represented exclusively by Camilleri Funeral Directors International, remains the most accessible facility for anyone in Malta wishing to be cremated.

The Memorial Park and Crematorium project shall include the following facilities to cater for all of Malta:

  • Crematorium building including all related facilities, built over a footprint of 500sqm.
  • Streamlined design blending seamlessly into natural surroundings, for least visual impact.
  • Mortuary and cold storage facilities for proper care and preparation of the deceased.
  • Ceremony and viewing rooms for families to give a final farewell prior to cremation.
  • A 120 sqm, multi-faith Ceremony hall / chapel and adaptable to personal wishes.
  • An outdoor area for social gatherings during or after the cremation service.
  • Memorial gardens providing various options for scattering, tree planting or burial.
  • A selection of indoor or outdoor columbariums for dignified long term storage of ashes.
  • Underground and above ground parking and space for funeral ceremonies.

All the above facilities combined with cremation and filtration equipment of the highest technology, to ensure the  lowest possible carbon emissions and Greenest possible solution catering for the entire needs of our islands.
